Software studios and developers

Websites for software studios and developers

Clients hiring a software studio want to know what you build, whether you have built something like their idea, how you price a project, and how you will look after their data. Developers’ own pages often skip the last two.

Before they choose a software studio

  • What do they build?

Web apps, mobile apps, integrations, internal tools, a product of your own: say which, and in which technologies, in plain words first.

  • Have they done this before?

Two or three pieces of work with a line on the problem and the result. Link to live products where you can.

  • How is a project priced?

Fixed price per phase, day rate, or a paid discovery stage first. Say how you work and roughly where small projects start.

  • What happens after launch?

Support, hosting and maintenance: whether you offer them, and how they are charged.

On a software studio’s page

  • How you process client data

When you handle personal data for a client, UK GDPR requires a written contract between you, setting out how you process it. Say that you sign one.

  • Your data protection fee

Most organisations that process personal data must pay the ICO data protection fee. If you are registered, you can give your registration number. ICO: data protection fee.

  • Products you sell, with their own terms

If you sell a product (for example, software for Making Tax Digital), give it its own clear description, price and terms, separate from project work.

A studio page: what it builds and for whom, how projects are scoped and priced, and how to start a conversation.

Quill Software, a fictional studio, describes what it builds in plain words, with two short pieces of work and how projects are priced.

Showing your prices

A starting price for a small project and a day rate, with what a discovery phase costs, give a client enough to decide whether to call.

£49 upfront for a one-page website, and £20 a month for the care plan that comes with it (hosting, updates and support), with a 12-month minimum term, fixed in writing before we start. Pricing.

Software studios and developers: questions

What should a software developer’s website include?

What you build and for whom, examples of work, how projects are priced, support after launch, how you handle client data, and how to start a conversation.

Does a software studio need a big website?

No. One clear page with good examples and honest pricing does more than a large site with little in it.

Should developers show their day rate?

If you are comfortable with it, yes. It filters enquiries that cannot fit your rate.

How much does a website for software studios and developers cost?

Ours is £49 upfront for a one-page website, and £20 a month for the care plan that comes with it (hosting, updates and support), with a 12-month minimum term.
