Websites for consultants

Buyers of consultancy are busy and sceptical. A consultant’s page should say in one sentence which problem you solve for which kind of organisation, how you charge, show evidence you have done it before, and offer an easy first conversation.

Before they choose a consultant

  • Can they solve my problem?

Name the problems, not your methods: “cutting month-end close from ten days to four”, not “finance transformation”. Buyers search for the problem.

  • How much is a business consultant?

A common search. Say whether you charge by the day, by project or on retainer, and give a starting figure if you can.

  • Have they done this before?

Short case studies with the client’s permission, or anonymised if not: the situation, what you did, what changed.

  • What happens if I get in touch?

A short first call, free or paid, with what you will cover in it. It lowers the step for a cautious buyer.

On a consultant’s page

  • Professional indemnity insurance

Many clients, and all public-sector buyers, ask for it. Say you hold it and at what level if you do.

  • Frameworks and approvals, if you are on them

Public-sector buyers often buy through frameworks, such as the Crown Commercial Service management consultancy frameworks. If you are on one, name it; it is a reason to shortlist you.

  • Case studies you have permission to publish

Name a client only with written permission. An anonymised case study (“a 40-person manufacturer in Bedfordshire”) is still useful.

Demonstration, fictional management consultancy

Northgate Advisory

A consultancy page: the problems it takes on, how an engagement is priced, and a short call to see whether it fits.

Northgate Advisory, a fictional consultancy, states the problems it solves in its first line, then day rates and short anonymised case studies.

Showing your prices

Many consultants hide rates, so a stated day rate or project range sets you apart and filters out enquiries that will never fit the budget.

£49 upfront for a one-page website, and £20 a month for the care plan that comes with it (hosting, updates and support), with a 12-month minimum term, fixed in writing before we start. Pricing.

Consultants: questions

How much does a business consultant charge per hour?

Most consultants charge by the day or the project rather than the hour. A consultant’s website should say which and give a starting figure.

What should a consultant’s website include?

The problems you solve and for whom, how you charge, case studies with permission, your insurance and any frameworks, and a simple way to book a first call.

Do consultants need a one-page website or a larger site?

One page is enough while you are known by referral. Add pages for case studies or services when buyers start finding you by search.
