Garages and mechanics

Websites for garages and mechanics

Drivers search for a garage when an MOT is due or a warning light comes on. The page should say whether you test MOTs and for how much, what a service costs, your hourly labour rate, and how quickly you can take the car in.

Before they choose a garage

  • How much does a garage charge per hour?

It is among the most searched questions about garages. Publishing your labour rate is unusual, and that is exactly why it builds trust.

  • Can you do my MOT this week?

If you are an MOT test centre, say so at the top, with the price and how to book. Say whether you do the retest free if the work is done with you.

  • Do you work on my make?

Name the makes you specialise in, and whether you do diagnostics, air conditioning, tyres or electric and hybrid vehicles.

  • How do I get home?

Courtesy cars, collection and delivery, a waiting area: say what you offer, because it often decides between two garages.

On a garage’s page

  • The MOT price, within the legal maximum

The government sets the maximum fee an MOT test centre may charge for each class of vehicle. Many garages charge less; show your price, and never more than the maximum. GOV.UK: MOT test fees.

  • That you are an approved MOT centre

Only garages approved by DVSA can carry out MOT tests. If you are not one, do not imply you are; say you can arrange one instead.

  • Warranty on parts and labour

State how long your work and the parts you fit are guaranteed for, and whether servicing keeps a new car’s manufacturer warranty intact.

Kestrel Motors

A garage page: MOT, servicing and repair prices, a gallery of the workshop, and booking by message or phone.

Kestrel Motors, a fictional garage, puts the MOT price and booking first, with service prices and the labour rate beneath.

Showing your prices

The MOT price is the one figure every driver compares, and it has an official ceiling published on GOV.UK. Add fixed prices for an interim and a full service by engine size, and your labour rate, and most first questions are answered.

Garages and mechanics: questions

How much does an MOT cost?

No more than the maximum the government sets for the vehicle’s class, published on GOV.UK. Many garages charge less; a garage’s website should show its own price.

What should a garage’s website include?

Whether you test MOTs and the price, service prices, your labour rate, the makes and work you cover, courtesy cars or collection, opening hours and how to book.

Should a mechanic publish an hourly rate?

Yes. Drivers search for it, few garages show it, and showing it makes you the one they ring.
