Free website builder or a website made for you?

Doing it yourself

  • You choose everything and can change it whenever you like
  • You write the words and pick the photographs yourself
  • Free plans often show the builder’s name or use its address rather than your own domain
  • It takes an evening or several, depending on how much you want to get right

Having it made

  • Someone else writes and checks the page from what you tell them
  • You pay more upfront, and often monthly for hosting and changes
  • Check that you own the domain and the finished page
  • Ask how changes are made and what they cost

Questions to ask either way

  • Is it on my own domain, and is the domain registered to me?
  • How fast is it on a phone?
  • Can I move it somewhere else if I want to?
  • What does a change cost, and how long does it take?

Questions people ask

Can I build a website for my business for free?

Yes, several builders have free plans, but they usually show the builder’s name and do not use your own domain. A domain of your own costs a small amount each year.

What does a website made for me cost?

Ours is £49 upfront for a one-page website, and £20 a month for the care plan that comes with it (hosting, updates and support), with a 12-month minimum term.
